1. The institution responsible for national and other measurement standards and the scientific metrology is the Slovak Institute of Metrology (SMU) functioning according to the Law of Metrology as a state administrative body for this field.

It is charged with following main activities:

to implement, improve, maintain and compare on at international level the Slovak national standards of physical and technical quantities and their measurement units and to transfer their values to secondary standards,

representation of the Slovak Republic in international metrological organizations,

to carry out research and scientific-technical development in the field of metrology,

to calibrate the working standards (for legal metrology laboratories) and working instruments,

to carry out the pattern evaluation of measuring instruments,

to supervise the realization of Slovak Certified reference materials,

to elaborate the standards and technical regulations for verification and calibration of measuring instruments,

to educate and to train specialists for legal metrology and industrial calibration laboratories, to certify personnel for metrology,

to perform specialized and technical activities in the field of accreditation, certification as well as authorization of metrological and calibration laboratories.

2. The institutions responsible for legal metrology are:

a) Slovak Office of Standards, Metrology and Testing (UNMS) as the central steering body of state administration of the field of metrology.

The main tasks and activities of the UNMS in the field of metrology are:

- elaboration and realization of the state policy in metrology,

- preparation of the legislative and legal rules (laws and decrees) referring to metrology,

- steering of metrology in the state in the scope given by the Law on metrology, including subordinate metrological institutions (Slovak Institute of Metrology), Slovak Legal Metrology, Slovak Metrology Inspectorate,

- methodic activity and supervision of activities in metrology.

b) Slovak Legal Metrology (SLM) - a subordinate institution of the UNMS

This institution is charged with following main activities:

- to verify the legal measuring instruments

- to calibrate the reference and working standards of measurement units (for industry)

- to calibrate the ordinary measuring instruments for customers

- to carry out the pattern evaluation of measuring instruments.

c) Slovak Metrology Inspectorate – a subordinate institution of the UNMS

The main task is to perform the state metrological supervision on measuring instruments and measurements in Slovak Republic.

d) The other institutions in the field of legal metrology are: State Centres of Metrology.

These institutions (established in factories or other organizations) are autorized by the UNMS for verification of the specified kinds of legal measuring instruments.

3. Institutions responsible for calibration service

Services in a calibration of ordinary measuring instruments are performed by the Centres of Calibration Services (calibration laboratories) established in the framework of factories or other organisation.

A part of them has been accredited by SNAS according to the European standards EN 45 000 is proceeded.
