Bulgarian parliament adopted the first Law for balances and measures in 1888. Thus the Bulgarian metrological service was established. At present the State Agency for Standardization and Metrology is carrying out all activities in the field of metrology to provide uniformity of measurements. Its responsibilities were defined with the new Law for measurement in 1998. The State Agency for Standardization and Metrology incorporates the following separate structures:
- General Directorate “National Centre for Metrology“
- General Directorate “Measures and Measurement Instruments“, which includes 16 regional departments
- National Metrological Council
- Technical Committee for standardization in the field of metrology
General Directorate “National Center for Metrology“ (NCM) creates and improves the system of national standards, defines the methods for transferring the values of the quantities in accordance with the national hierarchy schemes, approves and registers types of measurement instruments.
Approximately 40 national standards are kept in the NCM in the field of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, length, time, etc. NCM has created a system for developing and registering reference materials.
General Directorate “Measures and Measurement Instruments“ is responsible for all verifications of measuring instruments.
